Deep Valley Chamber Music Series

Alexander String Quartet in Concert

When: Saturday September 29, 2012 at 7:30 PM. 
Where: First Presbyterian Church of Ukiah

Returning to the Deep Valley Chamber Music Series by considerable popular demand is the acclaimed Alexander String Quartet. They will perform three string quartets in an evening concert at the First Presbyterian Church in Ukiah. The performance will consist of the Mozart Quartet # 23, K. 590; the Shostakovich Quartet #7; and Beethoven's Quartet #12, op. 127, the first of his late period quartets.

General Admission is $25. Youth tickets ($10) available at the door.

Deep Valley Chamber Music Series cordially invite you to an evening of Music in the Vineyard on Sunday evening, August 26, in support of our upcoming fifth concert season. Please join us at 7pm on the patio of Parducci Winery for desserts, snacks, wine, other beverages, a chance to visit with friends, and of course, chamber music, which will begin at 7:30.


The program will feature several of Mendocino County’s own professional performers, including Paul McCandless on english horn and saxophone, cellist Joel Cohen, and harpist Jessica Schaeffer. The Ukiah Symphony Quartet joins us again to perform the Quartet for Strings “in the Guitar Style” by the twentieth-century Spanish composer Joaquin Turina. The members of the Ukiah Symphony Quartet are violinists Margie Rice and Jessica Rice, violist Jeff Ives, and cellist Clovice Lewis.

Midwinter Concert a big success

We were treated to a superb concert on Saturday to an enthusiastic full house; three rarely performed musical jewels by Brahms, Dohnanyi and Elgar were deftly played--the composers would have been thrilled to have been in the audience. It was a musical moment that captured what is best about chamber music. Thanks to Joel Cohen for putting together this unique and beautiful musical program and fine ensemble of first class players.

Joel Cohen and Friends

Ukiah-based cellist Joel Cohen has brought together some of the most talented musicians in northern California to play a unique group of chamber music classics.

Joel Cohen has played with orchestras around the world, including the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Symphony. He will be joined by violinist Roy Malan, who is the concertmaster of the San Francisco Ballet and founder and director of the Telluride Chamber Music Series; violinist Philip Santos, who performs with numerous chamber music groups throughout the Bay area and is the concertmaster for the Fremont Symphony and violist Elizabeth Prior who is the principal violist for the Santa Rosa symphony and also plays with the San Francisco Ballet and the San Francisco Opera orchestra. Rounding out the group will be Ukiah resident Elena Casanova who has performed with the Ukiah Symphony and as a solo artist at numerous area concerts.

The program will include the Sonata for Cello and Piano in D Major by Johannes Brahms, the greatest classicist of the Romantic century. It will be followed by a Serenade for String Trio by Erno von Dohnanyi. One the Hungary’s talented 20^th century composers, his music follows in the tradition of the classic German composers. Rounding out the program will be The Piano Quintet in A Minor by Edward Elgar, England’s great Romantic composer.

The Merling Trio

When: Saturday, November 19 2011, 7:30pm
Where: First Presbyterian Church in Ukiah

The Merling Trio is currently in residence at the School of Music at Western Michigan University. It made its New York debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1993, and was named a finalist for the Naumburg Foundation Chamber Music Award in 1994. For this concert in Ukiah, the trio will be performing pieces by Beethoven, Haydn and Piazolla.

Season Summary 2011-2012 for Deep Valley Chamber Music Series

Our 2011-2012 season will feature three concerts.

In the fall, we'll open with the Merling Piano Trio from Michigan, hailed as "brilliantly distinguished group endowed with remarkable gifts of communication, magnificent precision, and an impeccable blend of sound."

In the Winter, our own Joel Cohen and Elena Casanova will be performing with several other superb string players from northern California, with a program to include the Elgar Quintet (piano and string quartet).

In the Spring, we'll be featuring the Ives String Quartet, which has been in planning for quite some time. Again, a fine and experienced group of players, the Ives has established a reputation for passion, precision, and provocative programming.

Hesperia in benefit concert

Where: Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on Orchard Avenue in Ukiah


Hesperia, Ukiah's a capella quintet devoted to Renaissance music, will present a concert of English and Spanish songs.

In addition Hesperia has generously offered the concert proceeds to benefit the Deep Valley Chamber Music Series upcoming season.

Highlights of the June 4 program are:

- Two motets dedicated to Mary, Queen of Heaven, by England’s greatest Renaissance composer, William Byrd (1540-1623);
- Comical and satirical laments by the Spanish composer Juan del Encina (1464-1523);
- The ethereal sounds of the early English composer John Dunstable (1380-1453).


Hesperia has been performing a capella Renaissance music in Ukiah, the Mendocino Coast, and the East Bay for the past ten years. The singers are Ukiah residents Denise Doering and Kathryn Allan, sopranos; Marilyn Simpson, alto; Jim Denton, tenor and director; and David Rounds, bass.
Admission is by donation.
